Thrifting at the Beach and a DIY Day!

We’re back! Our week of vacation in Rehoboth Beach was fantastic. Lots of fun, family and food. And a little bit of sunburn, but we don’t need to discuss that.

I started going through my pictures and I am not in one. single. picture. Not one! Is that how it is with you? According to the photographic evidence, I ceased to exist shortly after our first son was born. I guess that’s the lot of the main picture taker.

Of course, I had to do a little junkin’ while on vacation. The eastern shore is full of fantastic antique and flea-tique stores. Beach Plum Antiques in Bethany Beach was new to me but it’s sure to be a regular stop now that I’ve discovered it. I’m so lucky to have a cousin-in-law who loves thrifting too. She’s always up for a side trip. Thanks Kathy!

So much awesome stuff on the porch outside! A little tip for you: When shopping at an antique store, pay special attention to the stuff outside. That’s usually where you’ll find the best bargains. They put the good (translation: expensive) stuff inside, but the outside is usually reserved for the cheap stuff.

Check out this old row-boat filled with painted buoys. I wanted to fill my van up with them!

Giant fake marlin anyone?

If you can believe it, I didn’t buy anything. Mostly because our van was packed solid with beach toys, beach chairs and luggage. Not an inch to spare. It nearly killed me to walk away from such good junk.

Since I am still in beach mode, I thought we’d have a DIY Day ~ The Beach Edition tomorrow. That would be Tuesday, August 10th.

Fun, right? Come by and link up with your fun beachy posts. I’ll leave the definition of “beachy” up to you. Maybe it’s a project you made with sand and shells? Maybe you’ve got some fabulous beach decor at home? Come share your best beachy-ness. And it doesn’t need to be a new post. Dig through your archives and find your best stuff.

Did you see that I announced the winner of our Silhouette giveaway? Congratulations and thanks to everyone who entered!

Looks like fun! My boyfriend and I always love checking out antique shops, and it’s a good thing we have different ideas of what we want to buy because otherwise we’d probably come home with way too much stuff!! We luckily do a good job of keeping each other in check!

Thanks, we leave for DC tomorrow and after visiting the city we are either headed to Rehoboth or Virginia Beach (meeting friends in DC and the guys still haven’t decided which beach), if we pick Rehoboth I will check this place out!

Yay! Have fun on your vacation. If you end up at Rehoboth, I know you’ll love it.

Do you camp or stay in a hotel when your at the beach? My family is taking our annual trip to Rehoboth this month! We traditionally camp.
I had a hard time finding a picture for my blogger profile, because the only pictures that I have of myself are also from before my first child, or right after each child was born. After that, the only ones with me in them are the ones I one-handedly take with my children. Part of that is my fault as well, but know that you are not alone!

We rent a house. Some combination of my husband’s family has been renting the same beach house for 18 years now.

I love the idea of camping at the beach!

We just got back from Rehoboth also! But I did not know about that Antique Shop in Bethany Beach- I will definitely have to check it out next time. Glad you and your family had a nice vacation :)

My sister has one of those fake fish! We were driving across country together (her family and mine). There was one by the dumpster at the resteraunt we were eating at: her HUBBY totally made room for it in their van!

Love it!

We are headed to Ocean City Maryland in a couple of weeks and we pass right through Bethany. We are just joining my in-laws for the weekend there and won’t have a packed trunk so I might be able to talk hubby into stopping on the way home. I’ll have to see if I can look it up on my GPS.

So glad you had a great vacation. We all need a break and different scenery once in a while. Kimba, since you are the spray paint queen, I was wondering , have you every achieved a brush nickel look with spray paint? I too fell in love with the oil-rubbed bronze and have painted everything from my dining room chandelier, door hardware light plates and everything else I could get my hands on but I am now working on my master bedroom and bath and want that brushed nickel on my redo light fixture. I tried the brushed nickel Rustoleum but it looks like gray primer to me. Got any suggestions? Thanks!!!

I’m not wild about the Rustoleum brushed nickel either. I haven’t tried any of the others, but I’m usually happy with Krylon.

Glad you had a great vacation. We are going to Ocean City in two weeks and I can’t wait. I had no idea the Eastern Shore is good for thrifting. I will have to look into that!

Ooo—-that shop looks great!!! I love to see stuff outside like that. It lures me in. ;)

I’m heading out there this weekend. My parents live close to the beaches … and I wish I did too.

Glad you had a nice trip!

Those blue and white bird houses made my heart pitter patter! I would have LOVED to browse that shop!

My only beach themed project just got overhauled with bird themed stuff. Oh, well. Next DIY? BIRDS! :D

Moms usually do ALL the photos… I look back at the pics of my kids growing up and I am in SO few of them, you would think I was non-existent. :0) Glad you had a fun vacation, and thanks for sharing.

Your son looks like he’s having a blast running on the beach- so cute! I too seem to have ceased to exist since our son was born 5 months ago. I think I have about 5 pics of me and him together. I must change this!!

21 beth austin August 10, 2010 at 11:50 am

Thanks Kimba, what store has the best selection of Krylon?

22 missy @ it's almost naptime August 11, 2010 at 10:26 am

Kimba, I have almost no photos of my mom with us when we were kids. Therefore I have made an extra effort to MAKE my husband take pix of me and the kids. I just ignore his eyerolling.

If you have a minute to email me, i would like to ask some blog advice of you.

Glad to see you enjoyed visiting Rehoboth, I live in DE and we are pretty proud of our beaches. For more antiquing and a precious historic town check out Lewes…you won’t be disappointed. For swimming we prefer the state parks which don’t have all the boardwalk attractions so the kids are content with ocean and sand and they have shower houses. We usually do dinner and the board walk in the evenings!
