Sometimes I have a hard time making a decorating decision. I’ll try something new and I can’t decide if I like it or not. When that happens, I try two things…
First, I leave it alone and live with it for a few days. Sometimes just the process of living with something new helps me say either “YAY! I love it!” or “Booo! It’s gotta go!”
When that doesn’t help, I take pictures. I’ll try out different options and arrangements and photograph them. Then I’ll look at them on my computer to see if I have a strong opinion. Sometimes looking at a photograph of my own house gives me a totally new perspective.
That’s what I did when I was hanging drapes in my son’s bedroom. I was considering 3 options and couldn’t decide which I like. Taking some pictures helped me make a decision. Please forgive the crummy pictures, they weren’t intended to share but I thought you might like to see my process.

Option 1: Single panel on each window with barn stars (and fish food on display)

Option 2: Double panels on each window with shutter

Option 3: Double panels on each window with barn stars
Would you satisfy my curiosity and tell me which option you prefer? I’ll come back later and tell you what I chose.
Edited to add: I love it when you all share your opinions! I went with option #3, which seemed to be preferred by nearly everyone here too. When I was looking at the actual room, I couldn’t decide. But the pictures made it immediately clear to me.

I too like the double pane with the stars. I have the exact same problem with decorating. Great ideas for helping a person decide!
#3, my lord! #3! Name that movie? That’s just my two cents, but it looks great!

SHREK!
I love option 3 – It’s perfect!
I prefer Option # 3. Great ideas!
Option 3 looks the best.
I like option 3. I think the windows seem unbalanced with just the one drape on each side. I like the yellow of the barn stars to contrast all the blue.
Option 3 is just right.
#3, but with only the big star.

I like #3 the best too, double panels with stars. I think the double panels make it look balanced and the stars are just too cute. I didn’t dislike the shutter, but I didn’t actually notice it. I *notice* the stars and really like them.
Option 3!!!! Hands down.

I like the 3rd option best, double panels with stars. I think it makes that wall feel bigger.

I think it is so interesting that everyone is choosing #3- I am too. I feel like the shutter is too much blue and even though I like using drapes on only one side, with your windows, I think they need the sets. I am going to go check out your other decorating for kids ideas, I have hit a wall with my five year old’s room!

I like option 3 too – I think I would try the bigger star on the bottom as well. I love the map on the wall too!
Option 3 is my favorite!

I guess I’m the odd man out, but I prefer the single panels with stars.
I think the roll up shade isn’t doing it for me,(I know that’s reality and they serve a purpose) maybe if the roll up shade had a map glued to it or striped fabric or something… (I know you didn’t ask about the shade, that was a freebie!)
Funny they aren’t pulled down in the other two pictures…so really we’re only comparing apples and oranges…not just apples,Huh?
But can I give a great big ‘heck, yeah’ vote for the map, quilt and overall feel of the room?!
Double panel with stars…no contest, dude.
BUT…Thank you so much for showing these pics! I was trying to decide how many panels to purchase for my living room with almost the exact scenario, I had decided to go with fewer panels…the problem is that the panels I want are from Ikea… a 5 hour drive and they won’t ship…so glad I didn’t make it home with not enough!

I’m glad it helped you! I was hoping to treat the 2 windows as one to save a few $$ on curtains. But I just don’t think it looks quite right.
I like the third option the best and it seems everyone else does too. I’m betting you’re with us.

I prefer the third ::thumbs up::
i am alone in this opinion i think, but i like option 1. i think the single panel allows the room to be lighter and more open and makes the stars seem less cluttered.
double panels with the stars….is my favorite.
double panels with the stars is my fav….
I am totally torn between #1 and #3. At first, I thought it was going to be #1 for sure because I think it makes that wall look bigger/more airy, but then #3 I think has something so Pottery Barn-esque that makes it look perfect.
Can’t wait to see what YOU chose!

Option 3 hands down.
i have to agree . . . double panels with stars. now, i am just wondering if you chose the same option?
No doubt, option 3. I love barn stars and am actually looking for some to put in baby #2′s room. I think the four panels makes the windows looked finished.
Love the room!

I like #3 best–the double panels give oomph to the windows and I love the stars. You could even go with just the big star if you needed the smaller star elsewhere. I like the way the dark blue drapery panels and the gold stars complement each other.
By the way, what’s your source for barn stars?

Thanks!
I got a killer deal on a bunch of barn stars at a local outlet store a couple of years ago. Seriously killer deal. Like $4-$7 each. I bought a bunch and I’ve kept them in my stash. Most of them have made their way into my kiddo’s room but a few are red for Christmas.
Nope. Didn’t win.
I love option #3.

How about #2 with the smaller barn star hanging on the shutter?
Hands down, my favorite is “double curtains with stars between.”
Another vote for #3!
No question…..Option 3.
#3!
It would have to be option 3 for me. No doubt.

Well, leave it to me…I like #1. Although 3 is the fave it makes the room feel smaller. 1 makes it feel more open. Just me though.
I LOVE the overall feel of the room. Wish I’d had a huge map on the wall when my son was growing up. He would have LOVED it.

I like the double panels with stars!
I really like the last pic, looks more finished to me, the shutter is cute too but I think I’d like it better w/ maybe 2 shutters instead of one or maybe try hanging one of the starts on the shutter too?
definitely #3!

Without looking at any other replies, option #3 for sure! I need to do this to my mantle wall. I keep hanging and re-hanging things. A few nail holes don’t bother me, but pretty soon here the sheetrock is just going to give up!
Double panels with the stars for me too!

I vote for #3, simply because I personally don’t like having only one panel on a window. But other than my personal bias, #1 is lovely too. I think the shutter in #2 is too much vertical with the double panels. It might work with single panels though.

I feel like a copy-cat, but definitely #3. HOWEVER, I would like to suggest that you keep your eyes open for a box that fits the overall look to keep the fish food in. It’s my “hide what you can” philosophy. While I’m here–great blog! Thanks!
#3!! can’t wait to see what you choose!
Option #3!
I like option 3.
I have also discovered that taking pictures and looking at them from that perspective is so great for making decorating decisions!! OR for finding out what’s missing/what looks bare/what looks cluttered/etc. Great tips!
All four panels and the stars for me!
#3 for sure! love it. also love the map.
