How to Make a Decorating Decision

Sometimes I have a hard time making a decorating decision. I’ll try something new and I can’t decide if I like it or not. When that happens, I try two things…

First, I leave it alone and live with it for a few days. Sometimes just the process of living with something new helps me say either  “YAY! I love it!” or “Booo! It’s gotta go!”

When that doesn’t help, I take pictures. I’ll try out different options and arrangements and photograph them. Then I’ll look at them on my computer to see if I have a strong opinion. Sometimes looking at a photograph of my own house gives me a totally new perspective.

That’s what I did when I was hanging drapes in my son’s bedroom. I was considering 3 options and couldn’t decide which I like. Taking some pictures helped me make a decision. Please forgive the crummy pictures, they weren’t intended to share but I thought you might like to see my process.

single panel with stars
Option 1: Single panel on each window with barn stars (and fish food on display)

double panels with shutter
Option 2: Double panels on each window with shutter

double panels with stars
Option 3: Double panels on each window with barn stars

Would you satisfy my curiosity and tell me which option you prefer? I’ll come back later and tell you what I chose.

Edited to add: I love it when you all share your opinions! I went with option #3, which seemed to be preferred by nearly everyone here too. When I was looking at the actual room, I couldn’t decide. But the pictures made it immediately clear to me.

I’d say double panels with barn stars. Very cute!

#3 of course!!! Love those stars!

4 Sadie April 12, 2010 at 1:57 pm

I like #3 BUT….. I’d prefer to see the barn stars in a different color, maybe a brick red or the sage green from the quilt.

#3 but paint the stars red!! :)

15 Tiffany April 12, 2010 at 2:59 pm

#3 Fo’ sures…. I’m reading folks want you to paint those stars, I really really really like them in the mustard yellow. Red is soo typical, don’t change ‘em! It adds so much pop, it’s my favorite part. (Also, relaxed romans look great in navy, you could always use the fabric and try that.)

#3!! I love seeing pictures of your son’s room. I am still plucking away at getting my boys done but this room was a big inspiration for me!

I like Option 1best but it looks like I’m in the minority!

19 Angie April 12, 2010 at 3:07 pm

I love option #3 (just like, oh about everyone else!) Also, that yellow for the stars is perfect! No need to change it to red or some other color. The contrast is good!

20 Lisa April 12, 2010 at 3:10 pm

Wow, amazing amount of comments for curtains indeed! It’s all according to what you are wanting to acheive. My first reaction was #1 makes it much brighter and the wall seems larger. #2 seems dark. #3 seems almost perfect. My instinct would be go with #4 which would be use the double panels, but mount the shutter on the wall repainted in perhaps a matching red from the quilt then hang one of the stars directly over the shutter in layer fashion. I think the shutter is from your prior headboard, maybe?

Oooh! I like that idea! And yes, the shutters were from a previous headboard. Good memory!

I like option #3 too… and the gold stars go with the map on the other side of the room. No need to paint them.

Number 1 is too skimpy.
Number 2 is too boring with all those vertical shapes.
Number 3 is JUST right!

I prefer the last option (#3). Looks like thats’s the majority!

30 Grace April 12, 2010 at 4:47 pm

I love the single panel with the stars as the first choice, double panels with the stars as the second and not really a fan of the lone shutter!

For a while, I was leaning toward the single panels. I like the look and it’s CHEAPER! :)

I first liked Option#1 because it almost tricks the mind into thinking it’s all one window. But maybe my mind is stupid because. But after seeing Option 3, it looks more “complete”. So option 3 is my choice. :)

36 Kimba April 12, 2010 at 9:30 pm

If your mind is stupid, then mine is too. :) That’s the look I was going for but I couldn’t decide if it worked or not.

37 Nili April 12, 2010 at 5:28 pm

#3 for sure!

38 Amber April 12, 2010 at 5:36 pm

I like option 3 the best! But have you considered raising those curtain rods much closer to the ceiling and adding a band of color (red maybe?) to the bottom section of your navy curtains? It would make your windows look much larger :)

39 Kimba April 12, 2010 at 9:31 pm

YES! I definitely want to raise the curtains. Even as low as they are now, they’re too short. I want to do exactly what you said and raise them up and add something to the bottom.

40 Tara April 12, 2010 at 5:41 pm

double panels with barn stars.

41 Nancy April 12, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Definitely the barn stars!! Either curtains are nice. Just a single makes the room brighter, but two feels warm and cozy.

I have done the same thing many times… not sure what it is about the pictures but it definitely helps me. I like option 3 the best as well… and love the idea of adding a red band to the bottom!

#3 – but switch the stars, so the smaller one is above the larger one. And keep the yellow/bronze color. Isn’t it so much easier making decorating decisions for other people? :)
