Some of the most beautiful things in my home are the ones that come directly from nature…or at least the produce department of the grocery store. A beautiful milk glass compote filled with gorgeous green apples. It only seems natural that we would decorate with food in the kitchen.
And I find that the kids and I eat more fruit when it’s sitting on the table.

A bowl of Clementines in my favorite aqua serving bowl.

Is Pottery Barn pushing it too far with a head of cauliflower in the urn on the table? Look closely.

I think I’ll stick with my hurricane full of lemons that we’ll turn into homemade lemonade later in the week.
Do you have any ideas for decorating your kitchen with food?

I don’t necessarily use food for specific decorations, but I do love just putting a container (my $.50 wire and wicker basket on clearance from Hobby Lobby works very prettily : ) ) full of fruit on my counter. And you’re right…we DO eat more fruit when it’s out like that.

I think that decorating with food in the kitchen is a great idea! I think that we always have some edibles on display here and it really makes it feel more homey, doesn’t it?
Now…cauliflower in an urn? Hmm…maybe that’s what I should be doing instead!

Hi Kimba, I actually love PB’s cauliflower idea, I just think it must ‘smell’ after a while… but pretty! I only decorate with fake food, is that too bad? Hvae a great day!

I like to put our fruit in pretty baskets and containers as well. Right now I have a heirloom white wire basket (from Goodwill) filled with gala apples, a white bowl ($1 table from antique store) filled with lemons, and a small apothecary jar (.25 thrift store) filled with layers of dried beans. I also store our dried beans, grains, rices, oats, herbs in glass containers I’ve either thrifted or repurposed in the kitchen. Not only functional but also pleasing to the eye.

Sadly I live with two men who do don’t eat fruit. Sometimes I have bananas out. Does that count? LOL!

Ha! I love that Pottery Barn picture and the cauliflower. They’re always messing with us. I swear they sit around dreaming up ridiculous design trends and then they bet on which ones we’ll all copy, no matter how silly (like wallpapering with sheet music or decorating with rooster pillows). It’s like the Pottery Barn version of March Madness pools …

I do the simple apples in an antique wooden bowl that my husband’s great-grandparents had (and we’ve inherited). Simple and adds just a pop of color to my soft color palette of my table.

I do the same thing with the lemons and oranges. It’s a bright shot of color and edible too!

oh friend – this looks just like my camera card. It’s full of all my dishes with fruit. I just haven’t diligently posted them yet
Love the cauliflower…when I get it on sale, I’ll do the same….for a day, cuz it does smell and turns quickly if not refrigerated. PB probably had five of them for that shoot.

I love the lemon idea – we had a Lemon Chill at the zoo yesterday and were talking about how we could make it at home.
One of my favorite kitchen pieces is a foot tall wrought iron stand in the shape of a tree. I’m not sure if it was originally designed for tiny terra cotta seed pots..but it’s the perfect size for about 10 apples or oranges. And, on some days, onions and rutabagas – ha!

Decorative citrus! I’m lovin’ it! I decorated with Easter candy this weekend on my dining room table and am regretting it. Much better idea to decorate with healthy edible arrangements than junk food. LOL I’ve had that lemon with hurricane vase in my head for a few days. Yours looks divine.
I also love to have apples & citrus fruits in my kitchen!
Another thing is fresh herbs — cut some from your garden & place in little jelly glasses by the sink or on a windowsill — they look & smell SO pretty!
Blessings,
Stacey

I love using food to decorate but I have to be careful where I place it or the 3 year old will have half eaten food all over the house!
I like using fruit, vegetables and even candies in baskets, colorful urns, open topped glass dishes, clean flower pots, or even in a clean fish bowl. Any container is subject for use in my house…so long as it’s thoroughly cleaned first!

I like to decorate with apples and bananas for a splash of color…but then when I forget about them until I smell them, I swear I’ll never do it again. Ha!

I can’t really see the cauliflower?! I do love the oranges and lemons on display and I agree when it’s out we eat more of it

I have fruit on the counters all the time too. But with nine kids, my bowls never stay full and pretty for long.
Love to have food out because, as you mentioned, it encourages healthy eating. I also immediately put fruit in bowls or pretty containers before they go in the fridge. Grapes look so much better in a big white bowl in the fridge than in the plastic bag they come in from the grocery store!

I love displaying fresh fruit–and fresh flowers–in my kitchen. I used fruit as a table centerpiece for a little while until my chihuahua figured out how to get up on the table to steal apples. My dogs will eat ANYTHING!

My your clementines in that aqua bowl are gorgeous! I love the thought of using fresh fruit but the only place I do is in the kicthen…anywhere else and I always forget about it {yuck}. I always have apples in the kitchen but my three years old loves to take one bite out of each of them and put them back…They normally don’t last that long. =(

Oh girl – you know me – I LOVE to decorate with candy! Did you see my peep bouquet in a jar of jelly beans on a bed of jelly beans? It turned out so cute, was quite cost effective, and we have enjoyed eating it all week long!
OK – so maybe I should do the fruit thing, too, for the nutrition value if nothing else. I love how you accented the lemons with the green leaves – that adds so much that look and is so simple! And yes – cauliflower in urn = weird for me.
OK – better run before I write a book and/or before DH catches me commenting instead of working on taxes – bleh.
Have a blessed week!
I tea stained book pages I pasted onto the walls as wallpaper. I wanted to knock back the pages from the newer books to go with the aged pages from the older books I used.
