Kimba Gets a Make-Up Lesson

by Kimba on March 8, 2010

in Real Me

girl talkSo I finally learned how to put on eye-make up! Wanna see? I don’t usually put on makeup in my kitchen but my bathroom was a mess. Just being real. :)

I used Mac Cosmetics in the video, but since this isn’t a Mac commercial, I feel comfortable telling you that you can find similar products and colors at the drugstore. I love Mac Cosmetics but there are perfectly good, less expensive brands out there. Here are the products that I mention in the video:

makeup

Mac Paints Eye Shadow in Stillife (I keep calling this a primer in the video. It’s actually an eye-shadow that I use as a primer.)
Mac Eyeshadow in Chamomile
Mac Eyeshadow in Mulled Cider
Mac 217 Blending Brush
Revlon Liquid Eyeliner in Bronze Shimmer
Cover Girl LashBlast Mascara in Black

Do you know how to put on eye shadow?

Did you see the 11 winners from last weeks DIY Day?

Wow, kudos for that great blog tutorial! I grew up a Mary Kay girl and have been to dozens of facial parties and would love to share a couple more tips, cause bad make-up is one of my pet peeves!

First- don’t pump your mascara wand into the bottle to coat it- you are adding lots o’ air into the product and drying it up! It’ll last long if you move slowly and do more of a stir motion.

Also, I think that sometimes when we use eyeliner all the way across the eye (from corner to corner) it can make the eye look smaller. Try only going 2/3rds across AND tapering the line from thick to thin as you move in (toward the tear duct). It really opens the eye up! Same for eyeliner under the eye- and NEVER go all the way into the tear duct area on the bottom and top- Raccoon + goth! Too much!

I totally agree with your eye shadow tips! Simple and natural!

You look great, kimbs!

I think this is a great idea Kimba! LOL….I can’t tell you how many times I want to “lovingly” help someone who has that bright blue all over their eyes! :)

I’m definitely an eye makeup girl! I have blonde lashes and tend to look sickly if I don’t wear at least some mascara! :) (I also use the lash blast & lurve it!! – I use the one in the yellow tube too & that’s awesome as well!) Love eye shadow too….blend, blend, blend is the key! Have a “beautiful” day! :)
Blessings,
Stacey

Wow! What a great tutorial–thanks!

I have a friend who swears by MAC products. You might have inspired me to go get a little MAC tutorial myself…Wonder how many products they will *strongly encourage* me to get? That’s always my hesitation…

You have also inspired me to run to Target and pick up a liquid eyeliner to try. I have never tried liquid… I’m such a creature of habit, I never try any new make-up until one of my sisters tells me about a great product.

Again–thanks for the tutorial full of simple ideas to try!

CHA, CHA, CHA!! Well done! I remember what a difference I saw in my eye makeup application just when I started using a brush applicator vs. the little sponge that comes with the colors! ;)

You look great! :) I am waiting for the Sephora to open up in our mall, and I plan to go and get all sorts of help. ;) I like CG mascara too…I haven’t noticed a difference between it and the expensive stuff.

You look fabulous! and I love Mac shadows, I also use the primer and shadow really lasts so much longer. The Mac help is fantastic they truly listen to what you are wanting. I’ve never come away from the counter looking “made up”.
Great Tutorial!

You are so stinking cute! Love the tutorial. I love Mac eye shadows, too. I’m not sure if they still do it but Mac used to accept 6 used containers (empty or not) in exchange for one free lipstick. I’ve been rounding mine up over the past few weeks and I’m about to my 6th one so I will let you know for sure if they still do that. Any containers – foundation, lipstick, compacts, eye shadows, etc.

Have a blessed week!

Haha. This was so fun. I wish I had the confidence to go without makeup but seriously I look like I don’t have any eyelashes if I don’t wear mascara.
Loved your post. Thanks for keeping it real. :)

15 Sarah @ Thriftydecorchick March 8, 2010 at 10:24 pm

LOVE it!! This was fun! I always struggle with eyeshadow too — I do this and then end up wiping half of it off cause it looks like it’s too much. Then I wonder why it looks like I have nothing on and I just woke up. :) I should just leave it alone and see what I think one day. Oh la la!
I use a creamy eyeliner (in the “pot”) with a skinny, stiff brush — LOVE it. It would seriously last me a year, if it was OK to keep the stuff that long.

16 Jennifer Allwood March 8, 2010 at 10:51 pm

I love me some MAC makeup. Did you know some stores give you a free lipstick with every 7 empty makeup containers of theirs that you bring in to recycle????????? Love that!

Thanks for sharing, Kimba! That was so fun to watch! I am scared of eyeliner, but maybe I will have to try out some liquid.

Thanks Kimba! Enjoyed your lesson :) I wear the basics, and you shared a very simple way to do a good job quickly. My husband gave me a MAC gift card for Christmas, and I haven’t used it yet because I don’t want to go in there feeling silly and frumpy and mom-ish. You’ve boosted my confidence! I’m gonna book my makeover appointment right away. Thanks!!

What a great gift! If it makes you feel any better, I was in full-on mommy mode when I went to the Mac counter. Frumpy snow boots and hair in a ponytail. They were very helpful when I explained exactly what I was looking for.

Have fun with it!

This was fun! And I *am* picky about my mascara and I love Cover Girl Lash Blast. I used to only buy pricey brands till I found that. :-)

You are too funny…I can’t believe I just sat at my computer and watched you put on make-up. And to think I knew you in the blue eye shadow days!

Thanks for the smile…and don’t worry, I won’t show Larry! :-)

Thanks Kimba, I used to wear makeup in college and a bit after but with 4 kids it just got away from me.
But this week my 5 year old daughter asked me why I don’t wear makeup like all the other moms and I began to wonder. I tried to do some but it looked like I was on the prowl as in college I wore it to go out and was natural the rest of the time. I am a mom – I do not prowl anymore so thanks for the “natural” way to wear it instructions. Just what a mom needs.

Thank you for this tutortial! I have often wondered if I am applying my makeup correctly. I still haven’t figured out how to apply my liquid eyeliner as flawlessly as you do! I stretch my eye and apply & still somehow manage to get it on my eyelashes ;)

I agree that blending is key! And make sure to choose similar colors so they DO blend!

Thanks again! KIKIWAGS.ETSY.COM
