Girl Talk ~ Skin Care

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I’m a total failure when it comes to putting on eye-makeup. I made this casual confession in the context of my New Year’s resolutions. Imagine my surprise when I was inundated with comments and emails…tons of them said “me too! me too!” and lots of them offered great resources and suggestions.

girl talk

I find it funny that any time you put a bunch of women together (even on a home decorating blog), the conversation is bound to turn to Girl Talk. So that’s where we’re doing today.

Fear not! This is still a house and home blog through and through. I just thought it would be fun to have a little girl talk now and then. Besides, my motto is “It’s my blog and I can wreck it if I want to.”

Today, let’s talk about potions and lotions. I’ll show you how I take care of my face and you share your thoughts and suggestions in the comments. Fun, right? Lame? Perhaps. But let’s do it anyway.

Here’s my routine…

skin care

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle/Anti-Blemish Facial Cleanser and Olay Regenerist moisturizer. I love them both. I’ve used all sorts of products over the years and I think these are my faves. Not too expensive or complicated.

Although I have a friend who swears by Simple Mom’s Oil Cleansing Method. That’s about as inexpensive and uncomplicated as skin care gets.

And as I hurtle toward 40, I find wrinkles and lines cropping up all over. Probably because I do this:

eyebrow wrinkles

And this:

forehead wrinkles

A lot.

wrinkle cream

So I started using Olay Total Effects Targeted Wrinkle Repair a few months ago. I don’t know if it does any good or not, but it makes me feel like I’m slowing down the process of turning into a Shar-Pei.

Your turn. How do you take care of your skin. What do you love? Not love?

I have eczema so I have to be careful not to dry out my skin…if I do then it causes “major” acne! UGH!!! I DON’T use water on my face because it dries out my skin. I was using “face wipes” that I loved however they discontinued them so now I am trying Biore face wipes…so far they seem to be doing okay!

I am BAD about putting on moisturizer. I need to get in the habit however I have a hard time finding one that doesn’t clog my pores and cause acne! I do put sunscreen on during the summer when we’re at the lake on the weekends but during the other days…not so much and I need to because I agree, Kimba, that the closer I get to 40 the more wrinkles I see and I don’t like it!

I swear by facials – either at home or at a great salon at least once a month…now that I have a child, I do them at home…but I’ve been having facials since 16 and not a wrinkle in sight. I also shun the sun…and I ADORE all the Clarins line! Currently I use their Line Prevention Multi Action Night Cream (for sleepy time); a.m.: Bright Plus HP Protective Day Lotion and eye contour balm. I wash with Clarin’s gentle foaming cleanser. It is a little pricier than other brands, but it works for me and it lasts months!

I have dry and sensitive skin, so I have a hard time finding products I love. It can be expensive to buy something, try it for a week and discover that it irritates my skin/doesn’t work. (My friends with less sensitive skin have benefited from my trials and errors through the years!) I love nice-sized samples so I can really get a sense of something before committing and I have found Sephora online to be a great source. You can often buy travel size sets of different lines and get a good sense of whether or not you like it. They also let you choose three free samples of other products with every order and I’ve discovered other cool things that way. Right now, my products of choice are by Philosophy – I love their moisturizers (for dry skin) and their Pure Grace line of body lotion – smells fresh, like soap! I still use my Oil of Olay cleansing cloths, but I’m open to new ideas there…

Right now I am using the Arbonne anti-aging line. Much more expensive that what I would normally choose, but I was trying to help a friend. and thought I could use some help on anti-aging. I am not sure that I am sold, because I seem to be having problems with breakeout areas, and at my age I thought these would have been long gone. I am very anxious to see what everyone else is using, especially on a budget, but that works great.

My routine is very simple right now – a mild, handmade goat’s milk soap as cleanser and organic, extra virgin, cold pressed cocounut oil as moisturizer.

My friend who uses Simple Mom’s Oil Cleansing Method uses the coconut oil too and loves it! She gave me a little to try last week and I really like it too.

9 Barb February 10, 2010 at 9:10 am

I used a new product every time the old ran out. Can’t seem to find the perfect one. And I’m cheap! Ponds is the least expensive and seems to work well but I’m cheaper than that! I’m now using the coconut oil, recommended on simplemom. I’m not totally satisfied. Leaves my dry skin with a layer of oil that takes a while to wear down. But my cheapness overwhelms my vanity.

Thanks for the girl talk Kimba! Much needed! I never do anything to my skin (sham on me) but ocasionally before going to bed I use a little bit of Clinique dramatically moisturizing lotion on my face and that’s about it. I hate the fact that I’m aging… in fact I get really depressed to be honest with you. Is there any advice on that? Thanks!

Ooohhh… I love me some product girl talk!

I have somewhat sensitive skin, I have tried numerous cheaper/drugstore skin care systems and the only two that my skin does not have allergic reactions to are Clinique and Mary Kay.

I am currently using the Clinique 3 Step Care System and then use their Comfort on Call, Alergy Relief Cream – love, love, love this system!

Then I usually just swipe on some bronzer, some mascara, and Vaseline on my lips and go – I am really all for the natural look and the quickest approach!

Even though I love this blog for the homey aspect, fun discussion!

Kimba,
Love the girl talk post. Yep, sometimes you gotta just take a break from home dec stuff. Keeps it all real, right?
I use Mary Kay cleanser and Oil of Olay for sensitve skin moisturizer. LOL, I am too cheap to buy the antiwrinkle cream stuff. This is me, like me the way I am, wrinkles and all, ya know? (haha)

For years I have searched for a “routine” that would work for me. First of all I have sensitive skin so just about anything and everything either makes me break out into a lovely batch of pink hives or it will give me pimples, neither of which I want at the age of 38. But, about a year or two ago (maybe two?) I was watching an Oprah’s Favorite Things show and she had on a product line from the Boot’s Company in the UK and how it could now be purchased at Target Stores here in the states. I tried it and LOVED EVERYTHING. I have used it daily and it’s both calming to my easily-irritated skin and it has a soothing smell that doesn’t make me annoyed. lol Their products all come in glass bottles with vintage labels and metal caps, just like you’d see in the 19th century. That just added to the charm and appeal. You can see a link below… I buy them all from drugstore.com and use a coupon code for a discount. MUCH cheaper than what the prices are at Target, but when I’m in a pinch and don’t have another jar of Vanishing Day Cream on hand, I run to Target. :) Anyway, it’s my favorite routine and my skin looks fabulous if I do say so myself. :) ::giggles::

I am 43 and I SWEAR by the oil method. I still have breakouts and have to use 50/50 castor oil but I love it! No more black heads and my face is moisturized! I use it twice daily. If I need exfoliated, I put a little baking soda in my palm and mix some oil with it – amazing.

I do not put chemicals on my skin, no weird moisturizers that go 3 levels deep in my skin – nope nada. I make my own body lotion with a little beeswax, cocoa butter, lanolin, olive oil and water. Works every bit as well and no petro chemicals.

For make up I use Larenim only. Love it.

Hi Kimba-
I love this post and girl talk is always fun. I am such a skin care junkie. My favorite store is Sephora. They give out lots of samples so you can try before you buy. My basics are Cetaphil to wash. I like the Olay Definity creams as I baked in the sun as a teenager and I have seen a differnce when I use this, although I hate the smell. I have tried the big guns- like Renova, but I didn’t see any drastic results and it is EXPENSIVE. When I eat right my skin always looks so much better, so I try to eat healthy and drink lots of water. Are you enjoying the snow?

I left a reply but I don’t think it took. :( It might be because I posted a link to the product line I love. Oh well, anyway I use the Boots line that’s from the UK. Oprah had it on her show a while back and I gave it a try since it was now at Target stores. My skin is very sensitive and I’m allergic to so much crap, that I was almost to the point of just using regular ol’ dial soap to wash my face. ugh. However, I must say that the Boots Vanishing Day Cream and their other face products are SO fantastic, that I’ll never try anything else. The bonus is they come in these gorgeous glass bottles with vintage labels and metal caps…just like in the 19th century. Beautiful and they smell good, but they WORK. :)

Until recently, I really didn’t care much about my skin or skin care/beauty products. But about a month ago, I just decided that I wanted soft skin and to keep my skin looking young (I’m only 24–I figure if I start now, maybe it’ll stay this way haha). I love buying at Sephora and CVS, because they will take back products that you don’t like. I have tried a ton of things in the past month, but I love my Aveeno face wash subbed out for a St. Ives scrub wash every few days. I also like my Neutrogena oil-free SPF 15 face lotion, as it makes my face feel and look better without being oily. AND it has SPF! Yaye!

I am 25yo and have been suffering from acne since I was about 15yo. NOTHING has worked in the past. I have tried everything, including Proactive, department store stuff, nothing. Finally I watched this one Dirty Jobs (w Mike Rowe) episode where he want to this place called Terressentials. They make all natural, chemical free products. I wash my face with their heavenly smelling cleanser in the morning, followed up by their non oily moisturizer, and I wash off my make up with a hot cloth in the evening, and apparently, that exact routine kills acne. I havent had a problem since! WOOT WOOT!

Hi Kimba,
For a cleanser, I use cetaphil. I heard it was dermatologist recommended. It works fine; not drying or anything. As a night time lotion, I also use the Olay regenerist. It’s the best stuff I’ve used and trust me, I’ve tried a lot! I’ve been using Olay products since I was 17 and I think it’s a good brand, but I’m always trying anything new. Since I am now over half way through my 30′s (did I really just admit that in writing?), am fair-skinned with freckles, AND loved to lay in the sun when I was younger, I am having panic attacks about wrinkles. I don’t have a huge budget for skin care. I have used philosophy’s eye believe cream which I liked. Right now I use Olay’s wrinkle repair and eye gel. I’m not sure what good it’s doing. I really would like a great suggestion for a good wrinkle cream (especially for the eyes) that won’t break the bank.

28 Mandi February 10, 2010 at 11:30 am

Love girl talk!! My 28th birthday is in two weeks so I haven’t quiet delved in to wrinkle creams yet….buuuuut….I have been moisturizing my face since I was about 14. I think it helps my skin feel really taught. I just use a cleanser, mouisturizer and an oil mattifying gel every day. And I sometimes throw and undereye cream on (Dove) too. Lots of little fine lines under my eyes – I attribute it to smiling too much. :) I also try and do an at home facial with Freeman green clay mask a couple times a week. Keeps my big ol’ pores clean clean clean! My grandma is in a nursing home – she’s 78 – and one nurse once told my mom how beautiful my grandma’s skin was. Her secret? Dove soap. That’s all she’d used to wash her face for years and years – forever really. Dove soap.

Also, at Stories of A to Z, Beth is hosting a makeup party on Feb. 17th. Lots of tutorials, befores and afters. I’m doing a post on how to make your real lashes look like they are faux and gorgeous. Here’s the link to her post about it!

I use a skincare line called Raya. Its an estetician line of skincare (its what spas buy to use on their facials and stuff). I have never had better skin in my life then when i started using this. Its not very expensive either and it lasts a LONG time. I generally spend about 80.00 on it every 6 months and that gets me about 5 items. I mean you would seriously spend that at Target on various cheap items. If you google Raya Spa Los Angeles you can find it and you call and order it. Their website explains what each thing does and I could give some recommendations too if you’d like to try it out. Seriously the best stuff I’ve EVER used bar none!

31 the BLAH BLAH BLAHger February 10, 2010 at 12:10 pm

I totally use the Oil of Olay Regenerist line, too. I’ve been using it for a few years (since entering my 30s – yikes!) and I recently had a facial. They tried to sell me expensive stuff, but when I said no way, then told her what I used, she caved and told me it was actually a really great line! She also recommended the Garnier eyeball roller for puffy eyes. I love it!

32 Kimba February 10, 2010 at 3:14 pm

Ooooh! I was looking at that roller-ball thingy the other day! I’m going to try it!

33 Angela February 10, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Loving this topic. I myself have a general routine. I wash with Noxema first thing in the morning – before I go to the gym, when I shower I have a bar of clinique face wash (which was a gift). I do try to moisturize, have approx 3 different things I use – I tend to switch every once in a while. Night time, again with Noxema.

I suffer from severe blackheads and acne. I would love to get rid of it all, just haven’t found the right product/routine.

Loving the comments, and I will be looking into most of them to see what will/would work for me.

And it’s only like $5 at Sally Beauty!

Dove cucumber soap.
Neutrogena oil-free SPF 15 face lotion.
If I apply foundation that day it’s usually a Neutrogena oil free foundation that’s light and then a finishing powder from the same line.

You know, I have tried so many moisturizers … cheap, expensive, you name it. I used to work at a make-up counter so I could try things without buying.

I have very sensitive skin and my skin is always a little red as a result. My mom has the same skin and she told me that she’d started using Ponds moisturizer because her grandmother (my great-grandmother) and mother (my grandmother) used it and they both have perfect skin. I tried it and my skin is now totally perfect. I can’t believe it. I’ve also used it on my daughters when their faces get dry. That’s *5* generations of Ponds users!

Now, if I can only find an eye cream … ;-)

Hopefully, I can buy some more soon. In the meantime, I am open to suggestions of cheap drugstore products that work on chronically dry skin.

I have struggled with oily skin and mild breakouts until the last couple of years, and now dryness and dullness with a few wrinkles. I swear by Hope in a Jar from Philosophy, great light all over moisturizer. I also have started using Origins, and LOVE that. The facial wash is more like a cream cleanser, and I have been pleased. My weekly exfoliation is homemade sugar scrub, which is just my moisturizer and sugar. That seems to do the trick. I am on the hunt for a nightly eye cream that works on dark circles. Any ideas????

My routine varies according to the sesason and i’ve used or tried a ton of products throughout my life. But I agree with Marta regarding good facials and staying out of the sun. Also, eating well, drinking a lot of water, good exercise, sleep and keeping your stress low are some of the best and inexpensive ways to keep your skin healthy. The products I use most at this stage of my life are from my dermatologist – MD Forte line that I order with a discount from SkinCareRX. I also love Green Cream created by a woman dermatologist in New Orleans. It’s a retinol product that doesn’t have some of the ill effects of Retin-A. But truthfully, I could probably give up those products and use my wonder product – Desert Essence Jojoba Oil. It’s amazing for just about everything. http://www.desertessence.com/jojoba
I’m in my late 50s and people think I’m in my 40s.

I will add that my mother used nothing but Oil of Olay and Dove soap on her skin and she had perfect skin. But she was born with it. I wasn’t so lucky. But thankfully, my skin is much better now than it was in my teens.

One last thing. If you like a lot of girl talk about everything from makeup and seeing “Faces of the Day”, perfume talk, skin care, etc. check out MakeupAlley.com. I’ve been a member for years and it’s great to check the reviews of products you are considering.

Thanks for the girl talk, Kimba. I always enjoy what you young girlies have to dish up here.

oh my goodness…girl, you now know what every one loves….except me. Still can’t find one thing I stick too…not good, I know since I scrunch my eyes so much. Speaking of eyes…we were supposed to do them together….what were we thinking??!!!!!! UGH!

I heart Philosophy skin care. When I follow the routine my complexion is wonderful. It’s a little pricey but I figure I wear my face everyday so this is my little splurge unto myself.

I also find a little extra weight helps with the wrinkles – fills them right in! Of course there are other drawbacks to this approach. Can we really ever have it all???

I have sensitive skin and eczema, so I am extra careful with it. In December 2009, after reading an alarming article about Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) and other parabens that are put in soaps and shampoos (even for babies and children!!) I made the decision to eliminate all SLS and parabens from my home.

That decision has been amazing!! After two months, I’ve noticed a significant difference in my skin and even my wrinkles seem to be smoothing out – no joke! My skin glows, it’s soft, and I feel better. Here’s my new skincare routine: cleanse with Extra Gentle Rejuvenating Facial Wash and moisturize with Naked Beauty’s Rosewater Natural Face Lotion.

That’s it! I do the same when I go to bed.

I’m all for more Girl Talk! I could really, really use some help in this area. My skin is splotchy looking. Right now I’m using homemade soap (I can make it extra gentle and soothing for the skin) and Aveeno moisturizer with SPF30 afterwards. Maybe I should try the oil cleaning method. I’ve got lots of nice oils on hand because of my soap making projects. :)

Now I’m wondering what make-up to use…what’s light enough but actually evens out skin tone? I hate anything that feels heavy. Anybody have any ideas?

I would HIGHLY recommend mineral make-up. I use Bare Minerals, and though pricey, it’s wonderful. My skin is in better condition since using this make-up, no matter what cleanser or moisterizer I use.

I’m a freak for natural products. I cannot stand anything heavy or greasy or oily. I’m an AVEDA girl 100%

I make my own skincare products using simple ingredients. You can see them all on my website. I would love to do a giveaway on your blog. I love love love your blog!!!
Anyways, regarding skincare think of your body like a machine. It needs to be well oiled, well cleansed, and well hydrated. Using better ingredients (without the chemicals) is the best ways to maintain the best skin health for the longterm, not just temporary results.

I use a moisturizer with an spf 15 everyday and I always put it on my face and my neck. I once heard a dermatologist talking about how people always forget their neck and end up with a youthful face and an old wrinkly neck! Not a nice picture.

I have to say I am so glad you asked about skin care so I could read all of the advice everyone shared. I tried the castor oil method last night and I do not have a shiny nose this morning–first time since puberty. I am so thankful. I am anxious to see what happens today when I apply makeup. Will my nose be shining by noon???

I have used the anti aging line from ARBONNE for three years. My skin looks better each year. My fair husband also uses the anti aging line. I loved it so much I started my own Arbonne business and was able to pay for my daughter’s college room and board the first year I began my business. The products are worth every penny. The products are safe and healthy. No parabens. Remember your skin is your largest organ and everything you put on your skin enters your circulatory system within 30 seconds. Read your labels. Skincare products contain some of the most harmful chemicals. Go check out the products online.
