We have a basement but since we are renting we are not planning on finishing it! BUT I do have some fancy ideas on how to make it a livable space! It's already insulated so I thought of hanging curtains or fabric over the insulation to look like wallpaper! I can use the fabulous 3m picture hanging strip thingies!

Of course I am open to other ideas too!! =)

Kimba - we are (Dan is) finishing our basement by ourselves now. 1200 more sq feet - YES! An office, laundry/craft room, bathroom, storage room, kitchen and massive movie screen. Only problem is we are paying cash as we go and it's been a year since we started. Drywall should be happening in the month. I cheer Dan on and bite my tongue dealing with all the mess that is upstairs now in our home.

So if you ever want to commiserate - I'm your girl. Good luck...I LOVE having a hubby who is not only nice and cute, but handy!

We did something similar with the basement stairs in our last house. On one side we did bookshelves. The other side we made a built in toy box the legnth of stairs. We just loved it. Good luck and I can't wait to see the finished project.

We have a basement. We didn't for the last 2 years in Texas (no one does), but when we moved back to Colorado, it was on my list! I really missed having one in Texas! The extra space is fabulous. Lucky for me ours came already finished! It's still mostly empty at this point, but eventually my DIY project will be furnishing and decorating it! My favorite kind of project.

We don't have a basement...Not many people around Memphis, do, I think. It's just not a Southern thing. I heard once that in cold areas of the country (meaning the parts of the country that have very cold winters, like Montana) that the frost line is so deep that when houses are built they just go ahead and dig a little bit deeper so the house can have a basement. Since the South doesn't have frigid winters like that, a basement is more of an undertaking. In fact, none of my family that I know of has ever had a house with a basement, and very few people I know have one.

On to projects, my wonderful Sound Man has redone our living room and I LOVE it. It's still, after two (or is it three now?) years of it being completed, my favorite room of the house.

Oh, this will be fun to follow! I loved our old house with a basement and I really miss it in our newer ranch-style house. We did finish ours, too, and it's just a great space to be able to put a lot of different things in. Out west here, most of the old houses have basements, and most of the new (post 1960) ones don't. It's really expensive to add a basement to a new house now, so most choose not to.

How fun! That's a big project for sure-we don't have basements in our area but we did convert part of our over sized garage into a family room. While pregnant with child number 3, with a 3 year old and one year old underfoot. That was an adventure!

My husband and I took on our unfinished basement a few years after we moved into our house. I did all the design, trim, and paint work, and he did all the construction. I helped him when he needed it. It took him about 6 months. He did it during the winter and usually had football or golf on a tv for company. Since you can close the door, the remodel doesn't effect how you live in your house, like a kitchen or bathrom remodel does. He rented some heavy tools and a sheetrock lifter to do the ceiling. I was quite proud of him as it turned out great. We did hire a plumber to install a bathroom and re-route some pipes, but other than that we did everything. Good Luck with it. Diane

Yep we finished a room in the basement, which for us was a pretty big deal since we hadn't done any home reno projects before that. We bought a book and started putting in the walls.

Well, I was the designer, general contractor, and foreman for my basement but I didn't actually pound in the nail. That was nerve racking enough for me. We stick to little projects like my daughter's new studio. My husband is a tinkerer so he is into model trains. Builds the whole thing ~ landscaping, bridges.... but doing a whole basement ourselves ~ no Ma'am. I wish you all the best and look forward to posts on the progress!

We don't have a basement, but we are at the half way point of remodeling our entire house. It's taken us about 2 years so far, but we should be finished in about another year. It's getting REALLY old living in a construction zone! LOL

We finished our basement about a year ago due to sewer backup. It was actually already finished, but they had to cut up the drywall and remove almost everything the sewage touched - so we took the time to tear down some walls and make it work better for us. It was a year of chaos, but in the end it is totally worth it. I wonder how we'd "fit" in our house now without it!

It was actually already finished, but they had to cut up the drywall and remove almost everything the sewage touched – so we took the time to tear down some walls and make it work better for us. It was a year of chaos, but in the end it is totally worth it. I wonder how we’d “fit” in our house now without it!

It will be worth the work when it's done, trust me. The shelves with different background colors are very nice. With the exception of the roofing and pouring the concrete basement our family built the house we live in right now and moved in 10 years ago. The basement is not finished, we just can't get enthusiastic about another big project.

Yes, we have a basement. AND we live in CA. Not the norm for here. Our is basically living space {that we don't use much}. It's finished, lots of natural light b/c there is a hill that slopes down on the side of the house. Plus 3 other windows. I don't have the experience with the major undertaking. We only ripped out the old carpets {they were ruined from texturing the walls & we'd planned on replacing them eventually} and then we just painted the concrete floors. Thus the reason why it's mostly unused. It's cold down there right now. And cold because it feels so empty.

Good luck! Make sure you post updates along the way. For us to see, and you to remember!

How exciting! We'd love to finish our basement, but would have to have specific plans first to get the permits that are required here. Oh and one more thing holding us back...money!

Sounds like a fun project! I can't wait to see how it turns out. BION We're renovated three basements which included digging them down (old farmhouses) a few feet by hand, repouring footings and concrete floors etc. The finishing was the easy part. I think we're just suckers for punishment. That and I just love old houses. :) Good luck with it!

Oh I'm envious!! I wish we had a basement--and I *love* construction projects that you can close the door on! We always seem to be taking on projects in spaces that are essential to our daily life (like the project we recently finished where we gave our oak cabinets a beadboard treatment and painted them out white) and thus we can never close the door on the construction--rather the project is always in our face and taunting us until we're done with it!

Hi Kimba,

We have a full basement in our home and I LOVE it! The finished space fuctions as our family room, home office, playroom and home theater. Luckily Hubby finished the space so we had minimal money invested in that project {we hired someone to lay carpet}. Good Luck with your project, I'll be anxious to see your progress! Lisa

We actually do not have a basement but feel that this will be mandatory in our next house b/c hubby's tools and whatnot have taken over our tiny garage. We need the storage. I guess the biggest DIY project we have done is taking all the wallpaper off the walls of our old house. It was in.every.room and it.was.loud. boy that was a chore and not something i want to repeat. Good luck with the basement and I hope we get to see plenty of pictures!
