I hope you can all stand a little talk of wall framing, drywall, electrical wiring and plumbing because the cast here at Casa Kimba is about to undertake a massive project.
Our newly constructed home came complete with a cavernous, unfinished basement. The concrete block walls and exposed ceiling have been taunting The Hubster since the day we moved in. So last week, we received a giant delivery of 2×4’s that are the first step in turning that chilly unfinished basement into the play area/office/workout space/storage room/man cave of our dreams.

I suspect that this will be a year-long project since we’re doing the majority of the work ourselves. Hold me. We (and by “we”, I mean The Hubster and his army of power tools. My primary job during the construction phase will be to hold stuff as it’s being nailed and to provide sustenance. I’ll also spend a lot of time nodding in agreement and saying things like “You’re awesome, honey!”) finished the basements in our last two houses, but this is a much bigger project.
We’ve spent the last 18 months talking about our ideas for this large space, but we don’t have a complete plan. Just lots of good ideas. But in true man-form, The Hubster isn’t waiting for a final plan to get to work. He’ll start framing the outside walls and we can develop the plan as we go.
Here are just a few things that I’m dreaming about for our new basement space:

A fitness area so that the treadmill and exercise bike can finally be hidden from my sight and stop making me feel guilty. And lazy.

A super cool play area that can transition to a lounge space as our kids get older.

A beautiful office space.
Lots of storage space that really works. It may not be beautiful, but I love this under stair storage idea.

A space for the men-folk to lounge and watch basketball and football (and hockey, racing, soccer, curling, logrolling and whatever other manly activity is on the tube.)
Time for a poll: Have you ever taken on a big DIY project like this? Do you even have a basement? They’re pretty standard in this part of the country but I know that’s not true everywhere.

Kimba, that looks like fun!
Since you’ve done this sort of thing before, you know what you’re in for. We’ve done SEVERAL major rebuilds, remodels, new builds, etc…to our house, so I giggle when you detailed what your main jobs would be, lol.
.
To the 2nd part, nope, we don’t have a basement, I guess they aren’t real popular in Florida. I’ve always loved them though, when I was 12 we had one and I always dreamed of it being a dance studio just for me, lol…didn’t happen,

My basement is a scary dungeon. I won’t ever be able to truly remodel it but I hope to get it cleaned up soon and painted so at least it’s not scary anymore. My house is really old, built in 30s.
I really like the second photo. A set-up like that would be perfect for my family too! Good luck!

We just moved from Florida (no basements there) to northern Kentucky (where everyone has a basement) and they were building our house while we were in Florida. We payed to have the basement finished so we moved our treadmill and bowflex down there and right now (we have only been here 2 1/2 months) our old great room furniture. I have a bedroom that is my craft room (not finished either) but I would definetly love that space like the picture you posted. My husband is going to it his man cave next year before football season. Good luck. I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Good luck and have fun with such a wonderful project, ah the opportunities! And no on the undertaking of such a project ourselves. And yes on the basement. Under our whole house their is a basement (more or less four individual spaces) but mind you, that means under the ground so kind of humid and with next to no natural light and in some places a rather low ceiling. So it doesn’t really work to use it for any longterm activity (I use part of it as my painting station now).
Looking forward to see your posts with actual Kimba style project fun again!

Never had to do the “hold things up and say you’re a genius, honey” thing before on a big project. As apartment dwellers, it’s all about the little projects. I have lived in my parents basement as a young adult and dreamed of a major remodel. Uh, typical 70’s rust colored shag carpet, faux plug in fire place (shuddering at the memory) gold/rust plaid wall paper on 3 walls with dark wood paneling on the 4th wall. It didn’t go so well with my country cute late 80’s/early 90’s mauve and dusty blue decor. How did we ever think any of that was stylish?????
Good luck, Sweet Kimba, and I’m betting you will do a lot more than you think. I have visions of you Rambo style. You’re standing there, nail gun in one hand and a tube of liquid nails in the other with a scrap of toile tied around your forehead saying something to the effect of “board and batten is not dispensable!”
Can’t wait to see the pics!

I did grow up in a house with an unfinished basement that my dad turned into a great space. And my sister and her husband just finished their basement in the house they recently built. It was an absolutely beautiful space to spend a large family Christmas together.
Good luck and God speed! Looking forward to watching the progress!

Congratulations on starting your basement re-do! We recently went through that whole project at our house – my husband did all of the work himself. Well, the only thing we hired out was mudding and taping the drywall on the walls and ceiling. The results are SO worth the hardship… Just keep the end in mind on those days when it seems like the job will never be done! When ours was done, it was a beautiful thing!

We have an unfinished basement as well. And we’re slowly getting started on finishing it ourselves. And by slowly, I mean slowly. One thing at a time. The people who owned the house before us got a good start. It’s wired and plumbed for a bathroom. It has hook ups for a laundry room downstairs as well. Our biggest issue is that they framed it up choppy. We want it more open so we’re going to have a builder come in and help us make sure of what walls are load bearing and which ones we can safely remove. Then demo will begin! There’s lots to do. First up is a yard sale however to get rid of some crap!
We plan on having an office/crafting area, an all purpose room (toys, TV and a fold out bed of some kind), a mud room/freezer room, and a bathroom/laundry room. If it all goes according to plan, there will be 2 closets down there (one for Hunter and all his paraphenalia), under the stairs storage (for me!) and then shelves in the laundry room where I can also store the food I can during the summer. We’re also planning to install a wood stove.
I have a feeling this could go on for years and years. But, it’ll add about 1000 sqft to our house!

Oh how I wish we had a basement. But unfortunately, we live in a place that if we had a basement it would just be filled with water. My hubby finished our basement in the last house we lived in. I had to laugh a bit as I read your post. You see, my hubby said , “I can have it finished in two months.” Yeah right, it took a year! So, at least you and hubby are on the right track. LOL, with full time jobs and other things that go on, it will be a while before it’s done…but you will enjoy the space and use it often when it is.

We finished our basement ourselves (with the help of LOTS of friends) about 5 years ago. We had little to no experience – but before we started took a class in drywall installation and DH took an electrical class. I have to say it was one of the best things we have done. It came out great and we had a fantastic sense of accomplishment. Working mostly weekends (and occassional nights – we only had 1 kid at that point, although I was pregnant with #2) – it took us about 4 months. We had a schedule that we set up before we started and basically stuck with it. HELPERS are key! We had friends who would come to help build or help watch kid#1 while DH and I worked. We could not have done it without them. And don’t underestimate yourself! I did my fair share of cutting, measuring, using the nail gun, etc. There is no reason you can’t throw yourself right in there!

My husband finished our basement in our last home. He did most of it himself with the exception of the drop-ceiling. It wasn’t a huge basement so we ended up with 3 areas of living space (not counting the laundry room and work room that were already there), we had an area for the drum set, one for lounging and tv viewing, and the last was a nook for my scrapbooking desk.
It’s a lot of work, but so totally worth it. Good luck!

we DO have a large basement with a ceiling of decent height…however, Hubbys tools and workshop is in there. We started finishing our basement at the end of Summer 2009. At this point we essentially have walls, but its been a slow go as my husband is doing ALL of the work himself (other than the main electrical connections). So him being in carpentry school for 8 weeks, and now back to full time work has put a serious slow down on basement progress.

So next thing is to prime and paint, then to the suspended ceiling, Then finally flooring. trim and doors. I’m hoping by the beginning of Summer 2010, I can say we are done
It will add about 600 sq. ft. of usable living space to our 1123 sq. ft condo, which is huge! I can’t wait. My husband is looking forward to the man cave aspect, and I can’t wait for a functional craft room (vs. the kitchen table!)

Oh I’m envious!! I wish we had a basement–and I *love* construction projects that you can close the door on! We always seem to be taking on projects in spaces that are essential to our daily life (like the project we recently finished where we gave our oak cabinets a beadboard treatment and painted them out white) and thus we can never close the door on the construction–rather the project is always in our face and taunting us until we’re done with it!

Sounds like a fun project! I can’t wait to see how it turns out. Yes, we have a basement. AND we live in CA. Not the norm for here. Our is basically living space {that we don’t use much}. It’s finished, lots of natural light b/c there is a hill that slopes down on the side of the house. Plus 3 other windows. I don’t have the experience with the major undertaking. We only ripped out the old carpets {they were ruined from texturing the walls & we’d planned on replacing them eventually} and then we just painted the concrete floors. Thus the reason why it’s mostly unused. It’s cold down there right now. And cold because it feels so empty.
Good luck! Make sure you post updates along the way. For us to see, and you to remember!

We finished our basement about a year ago due to sewer backup. It was actually already finished, but they had to cut up the drywall and remove almost everything the sewage touched – so we took the time to tear down some walls and make it work better for us. It was a year of chaos, but in the end it is totally worth it. I wonder how we’d “fit” in our house now without it!

My husband and I took on our unfinished basement a few years after we moved into our house. I did all the design, trim, and paint work, and he did all the construction. I helped him when he needed it. It took him about 6 months. He did it during the winter and usually had football or golf on a tv for company. Since you can close the door, the remodel doesn’t effect how you live in your house, like a kitchen or bathrom remodel does. He rented some heavy tools and a sheetrock lifter to do the ceiling. I was quite proud of him as it turned out great. We did hire a plumber to install a bathroom and re-route some pipes, but other than that we did everything. Good Luck with it. Diane

Oh, this will be fun to follow! I loved our old house with a basement and I really miss it in our newer ranch-style house. We did finish ours, too, and it’s just a great space to be able to put a lot of different things in. Out west here, most of the old houses have basements, and most of the new (post 1960) ones don’t. It’s really expensive to add a basement to a new house now, so most choose not to.

We don’t have a basement…Not many people around Memphis, do, I think. It’s just not a Southern thing. I heard once that in cold areas of the country (meaning the parts of the country that have very cold winters, like Montana) that the frost line is so deep that when houses are built they just go ahead and dig a little bit deeper so the house can have a basement. Since the South doesn’t have frigid winters like that, a basement is more of an undertaking. In fact, none of my family that I know of has ever had a house with a basement, and very few people I know have one.
On to projects, my wonderful Sound Man has redone our living room and I LOVE it. It’s still, after two (or is it three now?) years of it being completed, my favorite room of the house.
